Continent's End: Nine Poems of Robinson Jeffers Print E-mail

The world premiere of Continent's End, Christopher Anderson-Bazzoli's new song cycle on poems of iconoclastic California poet Robinson Jeffers (1887-1962) took place on May 26th, 2012, at the first United Methodist Church of Pacific Grove, CA (Monterey Peninsula). "Golden mezzo [soprano]" (SF Examiner) Valentina Osinski gave a stunning vocal performance accompanied by the gifted pianist Bruce Olstad. The Robinson Jeffers Association presented the performance as part of their Annual Conference. The performance received additional support from the Center for Cultural Innovation via their ARC Grant program.

Christopher Anderson-Bazzoli provided an arrangement Lights, Camera, Flutes! the new album by the Resonance Flute Consort.  As the title suggests, the album features film and television music arranged for flute ensemble. Anderson-Bazzoli's contribution, Patton to Pyle: A Military Medley, is comprised of an eclectic group of themes from military movies including Patton, 1941, The Great Escape, Stripes, Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., and others.

Christopher Anderson-Bazzoli continued his conducting studies this summer at the Bard Conductors Institute in Annandale, New York. Under the instruction of Harold Farberman and Leon Botstein, Anderson-Bazzoli conducted excerpts from Mahler's Symphony
No. 6 "Tragic
," Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, Dvorak's Symphony No. 7, and Leonard Bernstein's Symphonic Dances from West Side Story.

Christopher Anderson-Bazzoli is winner of a 2012 ARC Grant from The Center for Cultural Innovation (Durfee Foundation). The funds will  support the premiere of his new concert work Continent's End: Nine Poems of Robinson Jeffers, taking place on May 26th, 2012, at the Robinson Jeffers Association's Annual Conference in Pacific Grove, California. Mezzo-soprano Valentina Osinski and pianist Bruce Olstad will perform.

Christopher Anderson-Bazzoli has completed another year as part of the music preparation team at Disney under the supervision of Booker White. Feature films in 2011 included The Muppets, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Super 8, The Smurfs, Contagion, and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Other projects included Disney Channel's Phineas and Ferb, Fox's Fringe, and ABC's Once Upon A Time and Revenge.

Last January, Christopher Anderson-Bazzoli spent a day in the studio with Grammy-winning singer Michael Bublé, conducting an arrangement by multi-faceted composer-producer Jon Brion. The song, "All I Want for Christmas Is You," was recorded at Capitol Records studios in a "live take" with Bublé on vocals, an all-star rhythm section, and some of L.A.'s finest orchestral musicians. The album Christmas was released on October 24th, 2011.

Christopher Anderson-Bazzoli joined Southern California's eighth-annual Carlsbad Music Festival serving as conductor for a major new concert work by New Jersey-based composer Sarah Kirkland Snider. The 60-minute song cycle, entitled Penelope, featured the phenomenal vocals of Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond) and a 11-member chamber ensemble made up of members of the Calder String Quartet, laptop sound artist Michael Hammond, and drummer Ted Poor, among others. Time Out New York described the recently-released recording of Penelope as "a potent melding of classical poise and alt-pop punch...the year’s most affecting creation."

Christopher Anderson-Bazzoli recently returned to Capitol Records with long-time collaborator Eric Gorfain to serve as conductor for Gorfain's orchestral arrangements for the highly-anticipated new solo album by hip hop legend Dr. Dre. An homage to a well-known song from the '60s, the 35-piece orchestra was recorded by another veteran of the recording studio, engineer Al Schmidt. Look for Dr. Dre's new album in 2012!

Christopher Anderson-Bazzoli continued to expand his conducting repetoire this summer at the Bard Conductors Institute in Annandale, New York. Under the tutelage of Harold Farberman, Anderson-Bazzoli conducted excerpts from Mahler's Resurrection Symphony, Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5, and Mendelssohn's Reformation Symphony, among others, leading an orchestra of forty professional musicians.

Christopher Anderson-Bazzoli has composed an original score for Without Snow, the new short film by Swedish director Magnus von Horn. The film was recipient of the Best Polish Short Award at the 2011 Krakow International Film Festival. The ambient score features processed shakuhachi flute and portentous drones.

Christopher Anderson-Bazzoli took First prize in the 2010 Ironworks Percussion Composition Competition for his 2002 work Prayer of the Heliotrope. The Ironworks Percussion Duo (Dr. Dave Gerhart & Axel Clarke, pictured) will perform the work at California State University Long Beach the Fall of 2011.

Christopher Anderson-Bazzoli and Kunjo director Terrie Samundra were recently featured on KPFK Los Angeles' "Global Village with Yatrika Shah-Rais". The interview focused on the upcoming 2010 Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA) which featured Kunjo on Shorts Program One. Kunjo went on to win the Audience Award for short films at IFFLA. Also featured in the KPFK segement is Christopher discussing his scores for the Venezuelan thriller Elipsis (2007) and the Sundance drama The Wind and The Water (2008), the first ever narrative feature film from Panama.

Christopher Anderson-Bazzoli recently completed the score for Kunjo, a dramatic short film written and directed by Terrie Samundra. The story centers around the title character Kunjo, a 12-year-old Rajasthani refugee, who faces a crossroads between standing up for herself or submitting to her place of silence in society. The film is being featured at the following film festivals: Athens, GA (2009) - Best Narrative Short; Oxford, OH (2009); Mill Valley, CA (2009); Regent Park, Toronto (2009). The score features Indian double-violin performances by Gingger Shankar.
